There was no Pali-Prakrit in ancient India. The language was called Sakya Nirutya, later it was called Magati or Pagati. There was no "Kr" sound in ancient inscriptions, hence the languages which carry "Kr" sound are the languages of  post Gupta period. The Sakya Nirutya or Magathi is called Pali (protector), because it protected Buddha's teaching for many centuries.
