I appreciate William for giving his intellectual comment on
this issue. I do agree with him that we must not see the birth of a person and
reject if a person who comes out from his/her caste and merge with Dalit
identity. I wonder if any one does this. I am not against Ms. Meena for writing
for Dalits. If she is really interest to merge in Dalit identity become part
and parcel of us, I would be happy. I also welcome many non-Dalits to do that.
But what I observed about Ms. Meena for last several years is that she is not
merging in Dalit ideology and Dalit identity rather she is using it for her own
personal gain and propagating Tamilism and Dravidianism among Dalits. (After
our strong resistance some of our youth stop running behind her). On the other
hand she is doing her own networking with caste Hindu Shudra groups using her
caste Hindu Shudra identity. She would not become this popular if she does not
have her Shudra network. Gandhi was not a Dalit, but some point of time he said
that he was not untouchable by birth, but by convention he was an Untouchable.
Ramasamy also said prefer to call himself as a Pariah or Palla instead of
calling him as a Shudra. I have never heard any such things from Ms. Meena. If
you are a Non-Dalit tell frankly you are a non-Dalit. If you are a Dalit, then
tell openly what you are. Here in this status, our concern is that many of our
people believe that she is a Dalit woman. It is our duty to tell them that she
is not our woman. If you are redefining Dalit is not by birth, but deeds, still
she is not eligible to be a Dalit. She is liberated as per anti Brhaman, but not
anti Sudras, who are the real culprits and perpetuate all Dalit atrocities in
TN. Similarly Dalit issues is not just in India, it is in Pakistan, Sri Lanka
and other parts of the world too. Is she ready to take up Dalit issues in Sri
Lanka, which is suppressed by Tamil Nationalist and LTTE Hindu terrorist group.
She joins with the Tamil groups and fighting for their rights but silent about
the rights of Muslims and Dalits in Sri Lanka. The second point is that we have
to refute that Tamilsim/Dravidianism is an anti Hindu ideology, propagated by
her and some other people, which is not true. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was clear in
defining people with their identity even though he admire with them. He wrote a
book on Sudras and dedicated that book to Phule, where he mentioned that he was
a great Shudra leader of modern era. He wrote book on Untouchables he dedicated
that book to Ravidas, Chokkamela and Nandanar, who are great Sakyan saints of
medieval period. Identity is very important in the politics. Dalit politics
need to protect the political identity of Dalits to safeguard the political
rights they gained through this identity politics. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar said, “My basis of my politics lies in the
proposition that the Untouchables are not a sub-head or a sub-section of the
Hindus (Tamils / Dravidiann), and that they are a separate and a distinct
element in the national life of India, as a separate and distinct.” If Meena agrees
with this and join with us as a Dalit, we welcome her. But if he asserts as
Tamils/ Dravidians and joins with the Shudras, we will continue to fight
against her hypocrisy politics as long as our people realize and stop
propagating her. I do agree with you many Dalits, who born in our community,
but do not stay or struggle for our rights. But we are not struggling only for
Dalits who have Dalit consciousness and who are in movement, but we are
struggling for all Dalits who are denied their rights for centuries, due to their
birth as so called “Untouchable”. We also fight against Non Dalits who are
trying to take away Dalit rights or misuse Dalit rights on the name of being
Dalit consciousness or Dalit friends. We want Non Dalit to come and struggle
for Dalit rights, but not to share Dalit rights. We do not give damn to any one
who does not join with them, because what ever we achieved is because of our
own struggle not by the struggle of “Mahatmas” or “Periyars” or “liberated
women” like Meena…..
